Taste of Spain 3 Bottle 90+pt Box Collection

Taste of Spain 3 Bottle 90+pt Box Collection

Here's another wine box hitting Costco stores and it's another ridiculous value buy.

We've posted about the Wines of Europe set, and the Grands Vins de Bordeaux collections already this year.

These boxes typically get you the wines for about $8.50/bottle, and they're rated 90+ points, so they are not the standard issue sub-$10 drinkers.

This time around we're getting a nice assortment from Spain that includes a Tempranillo, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Garnacha. From the back of the box:

Castillo de Olite Crianza 2020: Intense red color of medium depth with garnet hues. The nose is expressive and elegant, with hints of licorice, black fruit, pastries and chocolates. The palate is intense, ripe, sweet, with velvety tannins and a long retronasal finish.

Rancho Viejo Cabernet Sauvignon 2022: Brilliant deep cherry red color with a great layer of ripe dark fruits, subtle oak, and a long, smooth finish. Complex aromas of red and black fruit, black pepper and licorice. The palate is elegant and balanced.

Señorío de Irati Garnacha 2021: Strawberry red of medium intensity, clean and bright. Stands out for its aromas of black fruit, ripe fruit, violets, and scents of vanilla and chocolate coming from the oak barrel. Well structured, round and mellow.

We opened them all to give them a quick taste so we could report back on the quality. And what we found was very promising, and confirmed what a steal this box is. The wines aren't quite 90-pointers in our opinion, but they're not far off the mark either.

Let's start with the 2020 Castillo de Olite Crianza

We enjoyed it; the wine is juicy and fresh, tastes younger than a 2020; cherry, plum flavor; earthy, with leather and vanilla notes; medium plus body; we'd go a solid 89 points on this one (alc. 13.5%).

Next up is the 2022 Rancho Viejo Cabernet Sauvignon:

This is a real deal Cabernet that is on the light side but pleasant throughout; pours a medium ruby in the glass, nice cherry flavor; super easy drinking, clean finish. Another winner that we're going to give 89 points (Alc 13.5%)

And finally, the 2021 Señorío de Irati Garnacha:

This is a medium bodied wine with nice aromas of red fruit, herbs and spice; flavors of red and dark fruit, touch of smokiness; another easy one to enjoy. 89 points once again (Alc 13.5%)

It's easy to be skeptical on some of these box buys especially when the per bottle price is a single digit. But this one delivers.
